Abstract

This study provides a model of a school-based, parent intervention to support parents in building children’s mathematics understanding at home. Participating parents received instruction in how to support elementary children’s mathematical homework, using literacy strategies. The researchers designed and implemented a five-week model with the goal to improve students’ mathematics performance through support that parents provided at home. The goal of the study was to investigate the effects of a literacy-focused, parent intervention on participating families’ ability to support their children’s school-based mathematical needs. Data collection included parent interviews, pre- and post-intervention, and audio recordings of parent-child work sessions in the home. This study contributes to the literature by providing a model for parents to utilize literacy skills to facilitate students’ mathematical understanding.

  • Lilly Steiner, Monmouth university

    Dr. Lilly Steiner is an Associate Professor of Literacy at Monmouth University. She received her Ed.D from Boston University. Dr. Steiner is the Program Director for the Graduate Literacy Program and oversees the Monmouth University Literacy Center. Her research interests include family literacy, creating strong home-school partnerships, and assessments in the areas of fluency and phonological awareness.

  • Kerry Rizzuto

    Dr. Kerry Rizzuto is an Associate Professor of early childhood education at Monmouth University. She has worked as a classroom teacher in general and special education, a Reading Specialist for grades K-12, a Reading Recovery teacher, a staff developer, and school administration. Her research interests include developing social justice dispositions in pre-service teachers and developing culturally responsive pedagogical practices.

  • Vecihi Zambak,

    Dr. Zambak is an Associate Professor of mathematics education at Monmouth University. He received his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Amsterdam and Clemson University, focusing on mathematics education. His doctoral and post-doctoral studies centered around mathematics teacher development, technology integration, and argumentation. Since joining Monmouth University, he has taught undergraduate and graduate-level mathematics methods, curriculum design, educational technology, and quantitative research courses. His research agenda currently involved technology-enhanced interdisciplinary teacher education to support elementary and secondary teachers' noticing and mathematical knowledge for teaching.
