Open Access & APCs

Open Access & APCs

The Journal of International Students (JIS) is an open access publication indepently published since 2010. As an open access journal, JIS is freely available online immediately upon publication. All articles are accessible without cost to scholars and universities worldwide. No library fees. No paywal to download articles of choice. No download limits, free to read for all forever.

Over the past 15 years, personal funds and in-kind support/donations supported the operations of the journal. However, in light of current financial commitments and the increasing technical and non-technical operational costs, we had to make a difficult decision to  introduce an article processing charge (APC) to cover the operational expenses.

Publication Fees

Production costs are covered by Article Processing Charges (APC) paid by the authors/institutions/funding agencies upon acceptance of their manuscripts. There is no charge for submitting a paper to JIS.

Upon acceptance of your manuscript, a one-time APC will be applied. This fee covers the cost of publication and ensures that your article will be freely available. This charge covers publication costs and guarantees that your article will be accessible to all readers. After processing the APC payment, your article will undergo preparations for publication and is typically published online within approximately 30 working days.

All articles submitted after January 1, 2024 will be subject to the following rates:

  • Standard Manuscript Rate: US$2500*
  • Student Manuscript Rate: US$ 500

* The Humane Letters Grant is available to support promising and prospective authors, particularly graduate students, professors, and scholars in need from any country or institution. There are also discounts and waivers for editorial board members, and special considerations for the Global South scholars, and our goal is to keep open-access publication and free-thinking alive.  We promise to do everything that we can to ensure that no scholar is left behind just because of financial barriers.

Authors and institutions with limited funding can qualify for discounts or our existing grant on APCs, provided their articles pass our independent and rigorous peer review process.

The student manuscript rate applies when the student is listed as the first author of the manuscript. This ensures that emerging scholars have access to affordable publishing opportunities.

Please note that your fee support request will not impact the acceptance or rejection of your submission for publication.

Authors affiliated with partner institutions are exempt from publication fees. To have your institution join our publication partner program, please reach out to the front desk at contact@jistudents.org. By joining, institutions can offer their authors reduced or waived article processing charges.

Authors can post on a non-commercial open-access institutional repository or other non-commercial open-access publication site.
