Call for Special Issue Proposals on Issues of Racialization, Marginalization, and Discrimination in Higher Education Contexts

We are pleased to invite proposals for a special issue focused on the critical exploration of racialization, marginalization, and discrimination in higher education contexts. This special issue aims to provide a comprehensive examination of the multifaceted forms of discrimination that manifest within academic institutions and impact students, faculty, and staff across various social categories such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, and disability. Additionally, we seek to explore epistemic discrimination that affects the legitimacy and recognition of diverse knowledge forms and systems.

Scope and Objectives

Higher education institutions are often perceived as bastions of knowledge, equity, and progress. However, these environments are not immune to the pervasive issues of discrimination and marginalization. This special issue will delve into the ways in which systemic racism, sexism, ableism, classism, and other forms of discrimination shape the experiences of individuals within these settings. We aim to uncover the structural and cultural mechanisms that perpetuate inequality and to highlight innovative practices and policies that promote inclusivity and social justice.

Topics of Interest

We welcome proposals that address, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • Racialization and Higher Education: Examining how race and ethnicity intersect with other identities to affect access, retention, and success in higher education.
  • Gender and Sexuality: Investigating gender-based discrimination, including sexism, homophobia, and transphobia, within academic environments.
  • Socioeconomic Status: Analyzing the impact of class and economic disparity on educational opportunities and outcomes.
  • Disability and Ableism: Exploring the experiences of individuals with disabilities and the barriers they face in higher education settings.
  • Intersectionality: Addressing how multiple social identities intersect to create unique experiences of marginalization and privilege.
  • Epistemic Discrimination: Investigating the legitimacy and recognition of non-Western, indigenous, and other marginalized knowledge systems and forms of scholarship.
  • Institutional Policies and Practices: Evaluating the effectiveness of policies aimed at combating discrimination and promoting diversity and inclusion.
  • Student Activism and Advocacy: Highlighting the role of student movements in challenging systemic inequalities and advocating for change.
  • Faculty and Staff Experiences: Understanding the challenges faced by faculty and staff from marginalized backgrounds and their contributions to a more inclusive academic environment.
