Syrian Students’ Academic Mobility Struggle and Alternative Options

Abstract

This chapter sheds light on Syrian students’ aspirations with regard to postgraduate studies and the tough conditions that have been hindering their fulfilment. Collecting and analyzing students’ responses on the matter has uncovered their wishes and perspectives with regard to their educational future. The students have presented a clear vision of themselves as being entitled to better educational opportunities even if this meant joining online postgraduate programs at British universities to defeat the existing obstacles. The students also see themselves as entitled to contribute in the creation of solutions that facilitate their fellow students’ educational path.

  • Ranwa Khorsheed, Arab International University

    Ranwa Khorsheed (r-khorsheed@aiu.edu.sy) is an English Language Instructor at the Arab International University and Syrian Virtual University. She received her BA and MA in linguistics from Damascus University’s Department of English. She is a PhD candidate at Lancaster University. Khorsheed has also taught English Language at Damascus University  for four years. She has published several papers on language teaching in Theory and Practice in Language Studies and co-authored a book on Academic Writing and Research. She is also interested in online education and academic mobility.

  • Susan Deeb, Arab International University

    Susan Deeb (s-deeb@aiu.edu.sy) is an English Language Instructor at the Arab International University and Syrian Virtual University. She received her BA and MA from Damascus University’s Department of English. Deeb has taught English Language at Damascus University and Higher Language Institute for seven years. She has published in Coldnoon, International Journal of Travel Writing & Travelling Cultures as her research interest is focused on the integration of gender and ethnicity as roots and routes in African American women’s road narratives. She is also interested in online education and academic mobility.

  • Rasha Al Dahhan , Arab International University

    Rasha Al Dahhan (r-dahhan@aiu.edu.sy) is an English Language Instructor at the Arab International University and Syrian Virtual University. She received her BA and MA in translation studies from Damascus University-Higher institution for interpretation and translation . Dahhan has taught English Language at several private universities for years. She is also interested in online education and academic mobility.
