COVID-19 Crisis and the Future of Higher Education

Abstract

The chapter provides an understanding of the ways COVID-19 is affecting higher education and advances practical strategies for managing the challenges caused by the pandemic. To understand the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on higher education, it is prudent to understand the context within which the institutions of higher learning operate. It also offers an overview of the education system in Kenya, followed by a situation analysis. It then explores how COVID-19 is affecting and shaping the future of higher education and based on literature, presents the strategies to manage the effects of the pandemic.

  • Caroline Wekullo

    Caroline S. Wekullo, PhD is a Research Scientist affiliated with the Directorate of Research at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Kenya. Dr. Wekullo received her Doctoral Degree in Higher Education Administration, Leadership and Policy from Texas A& M University, College Station, Texas, U.S.A. Her research centers on policy and financial issues influencing the operation of higher education institutions. Her research interest also focuses on student access, retention, engagement, and completion/achievement, as well as the measures of faculty performance, global aspects of talent development, and conflict management in higher education institutions. Dr. Wekullo is an editorial board member, copy editor, series editor, and reviewer of several top-tier journals in her field. She has published 14 peer reviewed journal articles, 1 book, 7 book chapters, and made over 15 presentations nationally and internationally.   • John Shiundu

    John O. Shiundu, PhD is a Professor of Education, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, (MMUST), Kenya. John specializes in curriculum instruction. He teaches curriculum, introduction to teaching and school operations, research methodology, and educational management. Advising students on school attachment and supervising graduate students. Helping students to develop academic portfolios. Writing and Reviewing textbooks and articles for journals. Designing and Developing Curriculum. Areas of Research Interest include Social Policy, Education and Development, with special reference to Elementary Education, Non-formal Education, and Vocational Education.   • James Ouda

    James B. Ouda, PhD is a lecturer in the Department of Psychology, Masinde Muliro University of Science & Technology (MMUST), Kenya. An expert in Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E), he obtains his Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship (PDRF) from University of Venda (UNIVEN), South Africa. He has over ten years’ experience in university education and is involved in placement and advising students on school practice as well as project and research supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students, respectively. James has been involved in developing and reviewing curriculum as well as training of teachers. He has written book chapters as well as journal articles. Areas of research interest include education and development as well as M&E at all levels of education including Early Childhood Education, Teacher Education and University education.   • Anthony Mutevane

    Anthony Mutevane, MBA is a director at African Canadian Continuing Education Society, Kakamega, Kenya. He obtained an MBA in Strategic Management from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
